Sail Boat on the Maine Coast   2 comments

The Maine coast is beautiful to hike or drive, but viewed from the water it is downright spectacular.  This photo was taken from aboard the Schooner Heritage during a 2003 week-long sailing trip, just after we had set anchor for the evening.  I came across this photo over the Memorial Day weekend.  I’m not sure why I never worked on it or published it before, but here it is — nearly 8 years later.

Idle Moments and Eye Rolls   Leave a comment

My family is used to me pulling out my camera and taking photos of odd things at odd moments.  Like when we’re sitting in a restaurant, waiting for our food to arrive. It used to be accompanied with an imploring, “Dad!’ (as in “Stop embarrassing me!”).  After years of this I’ve apparently beaten them into submission, because I mostly just get head shakes and eye rolls now.

There is, however, usually a method to my madness (mixed with an inability to just sit there doing nothing).  In the case of this scene it had to do with repeating shapes, and the thought that it might be interesting to throw the background out of focus.  In any case, I like it.  And no one died from the embarrassment.

When In Rome . . .   Leave a comment

Back when we were living in London (mid-90’s), I took this photo in Italy with some black & white Ilford film.  The location is at the top of the Spanish Steps in Rome. I didn’t get many good photos in Rome for some reason, but this one has always been a favorite.  I think it conveys the relaxed approach to daily life in Italy, even amid the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s great cities.  At the time I was working for a company that had been acquired by the Italian auto maker Fiat, and we were all dealing with a certain amount of American – Italian business culture clash.  But even then I genuinely enjoyed the Italian way of living beyond the workplace.

Queen Anne’s Lace   2 comments

A “nice” photo that I gave a bit more pop with some digital art application, via Topaz Simplify.  I think the  painting effect and color saturation works well with this digitally altered image.

The original photo was taken in our meadow near Charlottesville, VA.

Approaching Storm   Leave a comment

One late afternoon at Bryce Canyon National Park, I decided to take a drive out to Sunset Point to scout the location for later that day.  The view from that particular point is at the top of a small hill and is not visible from the parking lot.  As I walked up the hill, a few groups with small children hurried past me and headed toward their cars.  I knew something was up, and when I arrived at the overlook I was greeted by the above sight — a huge thunder head that stretched from the desert floor and disappeared into the sky.  I set up my tripod as quickly as possible and started firing away.

I was able to capture fifteen or twenty shots before the storm reached me.  I covered the camera with a garbage bag that I keep in my camera bag and ran to a nearby shelter, camera still attached to the tripod.  I got pretty wet and I remember that it was some of the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard.  But the camera stayed dry and I got some special shots of the awesome power of nature.

Right place, right time . . . and a lot of luck.

Easy Photos   1 comment

Flowers make for easy photos.  All you need is a nice specimen that’s not swaying in the wind, and shade or soft light.  It helps too if the background isn’t distracting. Even though flower photos are a dime a dozen, I still find myself taking more of them than I care to admit to.  Then again, there’s nothing wrong with yet another image of one of nature’s masterpieces.
