Silhouette   Leave a comment

I like silhouette photos.  To take a good one, however, requires a few common elements — an easily recognizable subject and a non-distracting (and preferably colorful) background.

This photo was taken near sunset on a mountain top in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park, looking out over the valley below.  I had just about given up on sunset photos because — other than the nice color — the sky was devoid of any clouds or other interesting features.  However, the orange of the sky and the purple of the valley in shadow made for a nice backdrop.  And since scrubby pines were everywhere, it was just a matter of isolating a single bough against that background.

A very easy photo to take.  f/5.6 aperture; metered on the sky with no exposure adjustment.
