Check One Item Off The Bucket List   1 comment

I checked one item off the bucket list while we were in Paris — a visit to the gravesite of Jim Morrison, the late great lead singer of The Doors.  He died in 1971 in Paris and is buried in Pere Lachaise Cemetery.  Even though Hannah thinks her Dad is really weird for dragging her and Melanie there while on vacation, Pere Lachaise is actually thought to be the most visited cemetery in the world and it’s one of Paris’s biggest tourist attractions.  I’ll cover it in another blog in the upcoming days.

Morrison’s grave is a primary destination for many as you can see from the flowers, pictures, messages, and occasional bottle of booze (usually Jack Daniels, but the day we visited it was a bottle of wine).  In fact, after we had walked back down the hill a French gentleman came up to me and asked, “Are you an American?” (Maybe my clothes gave me away?)  When I answered in the affirmative he asked, “Can you direct me to Jim Morrison’s grave?”  Forty years after his death people are still seeking out his resting place.  Pretty amazing.

By the way, the message on Morrison’s marker is Greek: “KATA TON DAIMONA EAYTOY”.  It roughly translates to “According to his own spirit.”

RIP.
